Charan khad

Charan Khad a slum with 800 inhabitants in lower Dharamshala in northern lndia's Himachal Pradesh. Speaking and getting to know the people of Charan Khad inspired me to take family photos. Over a period of 40 years, 300 families built houses on this land and created a community. Unfortunately,

the slum has been under negative pressure for years to abandon the area. After two days visiting Charan Khad, the Tong-Len Charitable Trust, which cares for the people of Charan Khad, advised me not to go back to the village because the authorities had the area under observation.

The atmosphere in the village was already tense due to notices posted by the authorities which required all residents to evacuate the slum within 10 days. My presence could have inadvertently worsened the situation. Ten days later I returned to Charan Khad to find the families I had met earlier. Unfortunately the situation had deteriorated further as police had started to intimidate the residents. The people of Charan Khad were dispirited and frightened, and the timing was not conducive to following up on the work we had started.

The authorities, including the police, started to demolish the community with their bulldozers on June 17, 2016 around 3pm. The residents appealed for other lands to resettle on and more time to pack their belongings but found no mercy. The eviction continued until the evening and into the next day. The entire community was forcibly displaced into the street. 1 did not intend to capture poverty, but wanted to meet the people who live there.
