Camel polo

The camel polo players of Jaisalmer

Once a year in Jaisalmer, camel polo players meet with their Captain Chenaram of the Jaisalmer Polo Club, to challenge the Border Security Force during the 2020 Desert Festival. It takes camel and man several days to prepare for the game. During this time the players live with the camels on the playground in the Thar desert. Training takes place in the morning and evening. Before the final polo match, preparations are made for a procession through the alleys of Jaisalmer. The players preen their hair back to Black, shave and dress in their polo best. The camels are colorfully decorated to parade their beauty and be celebrated by thousands. It’s not easy to control the Camel with just one Hand, requiring a lot of extensive training for both Camel and rider to achieve a functional collaboration. After four days of training, the young camels begin to grasp the basics of the game. Camel Polo was introduced in the 1890’s in Jaipur, India.
